History & Purpose of the Trust


The Alaska Children’s Trust was established in 1988 with the goal of preventing child abuse and neglect throughout the state. The first legislative appropriation was made in 1996 for $6 million. Today, the Alaska Children’s Trust totals more than $12 million.

Seven trustees, appointed by the Governor, oversee the fiduciary and grant-making functions of the Alaska Children’s Trust. They include the Commissioner of Health and Social Services, the Commissioner of Education and Early Development, the Governor or designee, and four public members.  The commissioner of Revenue serves as the treasurer for the Trust and is the official custodian of the Trust Fund and its investments.

The Alaska Children’s Trust operates as a savings account. The fund’s principal continues to grow through private donations and appreciation, while a portion of the interest from the earnings funds grants to community based prevention programs. Grants from the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention have supported the ACT’s social marketing campaign and will enhance the Trust’s grant making program over the next few years.

In fiscal year 2008, the trustees awarded a total of $642,537 to 19 nonprofits in eight communities across the state, several of which offer regional and statewide services.  The ACT has contributed more than $3.5 million to child abuse prevention in Alaska since 1996.

The Friends of the Alaska Children’s Trust (FACT) was formed in 1997 as the nonprofit arm of the Trust.  The FACT mission is to increase awareness among Alaskans about the high rate of child abuse and neglect in our state and to raise money for the Alaska Children’s Trust.  Since 1998, FACT’s fund raising activities have resulted in more than $1 million in contributions to the Trust Fund.
